Research and Planning: Proposal Presentation

-->
We presented our proposal to our tutor and she felt our second proposal was stronger and more effective. As we were initially focusing our project to be on proposal 1; we have took our tutors advice on board as we have now also become on the fence of which proposal to choose from. So, our group sent around the plots of our proposals to a class of our target audience to tick which one they preferred and we will go off these results. I will post the results when we are given our feedback.

Research and Planning: Podcast

Research and Planning: Film Poster Analysis 1

 Taken
The genre of Thriller is represented through the low key lighting and black and white effect that is apparent on the medium long-shot of the main character. Also, the colour Orange on the title also signifies boldness and stands out from the black signifies bold things are going to happen which represents the genre of Thriller. From the iconic quote that is shown on the poster, the narrative is shown that it will be intense about a father who loves his daughter and seeks to find her from the people who have taken her. The character is being represented as a strong male character as mise-en-scene shows he has a gun and the camera is at a low angle making him look superior and powerful which suggests it will be suitable to an audience aged 15 and over as the gun shows there will be violence and the posters effect as a whole is very dark and sinister which doesn't appeal to a younger audience.

Research and Planning: Meeting Post

Over half term, we have all got certain tasks to do:

Me: Distribution & Production Company Name and Logo Design.

Sammy: Possible Locations for Trailer and Genre Research.

Amy: Research into the Film Name and ask other people on the options, Audition Poster.

We are all going to go shopping together to decide on the Mise-en-scene such as props and costumes. We also will be holding auditions for the cast. Most likely, we will add more relevant posts during this process as we will come up with new post ideas along the way probably.

Research and Planning: Team Meeting

Me and My Team just had a successful meeting where we planned out our idea's and a brief guide for the actual trailer we are making. It was a kind of brief guide before the Treatment and the Storyboard and we feel it is very well done and we're excited with our storyboard so far. I will post the final storyboard in the next post.

Research and Planning: London Trip

In October, we got the oppurtunity to go to London for a Media trip. We visited a Film Museum there, and these are just a few selected images took from our time there. During my visit, we got to see the real detail on the special effects make-up in the horror genre which is extremely relevant for my groups film trailer and the pictures above were pictures I felt were most striking and amazing. The Harry Potter section also helped a lot, as it gave our group the fantasy element. There were an amazing amount of props, costumes and even script notes in the museum and we really got a feel of how much preparation goes on in the production side to films which was interesting. Also on our trip to London, we took a visit to the BBFC where a woman did a presentation and gave our media group insight into what they do as their job and gave us facts about films and how they rate them. The woman was very helpful, and gave us clips to see and asked for our verdict on what rating that clip should be. The experience at the BBFC was very interesting and enjoyable.

Research and Planning: Proposal 2

Proposal Two

After a teenage boy has gone missing, he is pronounced dead. His friends are suspicious as there is no funeral and his family move away without any warning. When they receive voice mails off his number, the question turns to, is he still alive?

Editing-
The editing at the start of the film is going to be slow because its sad when the boy has died and been pronounced dead. There will be some fades to black to show they're suspicious. When The voice mail comes through and friends are scared there will be no editing, just a full shot of the event and then a fast jump cut which when collaborated with sound, will hopefully make the viewer jump. There will then be lost of fast paced jump cuts to show the horror and action of the film.

Sound-
Ambient sound will be used throughout the clip for realism. There will be slow, sad music (maybe a piano) in the background of the first part of the trailer, for when the boy had died. There will be dialogue throughout the trailer and a voice over towards the end of the clip for the film name and release date. When the phone rings, I want all music to be cut and silence except for the phone ringing, this will create tension. When the friends try to find out whats going on, the music will be more fast paced because of the feel of whats happening in the clip.

Cinematography-
When the boy goes missing, there will be a collage of pictures whilst dialogue is playing over the top. These pictures, will be a mix of medium close up and close up but then leaving the last one on an extreme close up to make the viewers believe he is dead, and feel empathy towards the friends.
When they receive the phone call, we have decided that it should originally be shot further away, so it looks like a normal phone call, then after close ups of scared, shocked faces, the camera will zoom in to a close up of the boys name on caller ID.

Mise-en-scene-
The outfits worn in the trailer would be very naturalistic. We would need certain props, like a mobile phone for example. The trailer would be set in numerous places, like a bedroom for example, when they receive the phone call and a school, where they find out their friend had died.

Planning and Research: Proposal 1

Proposal One-

A group of six friends decide to go camping in the nearby woods and all is well and happy. Then, one of the characters mysteriously goes missing and the other characters cannot find him. As the character's begin to become more suspicious, one by one more start to vanish and the remaining characters become petrified and panicked. Whilst the characters try to escape the woods to find help, they realise there is no way out and they're lost: there only hope is to find out what has happened to the missing characters, but little do they know that alien mythical creatures have been stalking and hunting them.

Editing-
At the beging, the editing shall be at an average pace because everything is normal and at calm. This will also create realism for the trailer as I believe horror trailers should be realistic to make it feel more believable and scary for the audience. As the trailer proceeds; the editing will increase and become more panicky- jumping from one shot to a totally different one. Straight cuts will be used mainly, as well as jump cuts. Fade-to-blacks will be a key content to our trailer, as we believe this editing transition represents the Horror genre successfully as it is a popular editing technique that horror trailers use. Slow motion may also be used.

Sound-
The non-diegetic music will be eerie and slow at the start; it will be an underlying remaining tone throughout diegetic dialogue of the characters being happy and excited to create suspense and to let the audience know of the darker side to the trailer straight away. As the trailer procedes and the darker side to the film is fully revealed, the music will crescend and get louder and scarier matching the panic of the characters. There will be diegetic sounds of screams and we are thinking of maybe having a non-diegetic seductive whisper for the voice over saying the title. The trailer will end with a loud sting to end on a scary note and make the trailer want to be watched by an audience.

Cinematography-
The shots will start off very naturalistic such as over-the-shoulder shots and medium shots to create the sense that the viewer is actually with the six characters and are part of the film. Extreme Long Shots will also be used to show how the characters are in the open space, and to also highlight that they are a long way a way from socialisation. We will try to achieve a birds-eye-view shot of the dead bodies because we feel this shot will take it into the fantasy element because it is not a realistic view of things at all and also because this is where the fantasy element is present because the characters realise there are non-human creatures with them in their surroundings.

Mise-en-scene-
The location for our trailer will be the woods and it will be low key lighting to signify the genre. Costumes that the teenagers are wearing will be casual dress that the average teenager wears, nothing too extreme but not insignificant as it will represent their character type. Fake blood will be used on the dead characters also. Props will include the tent and camping gear such as torches and bags etc. The mythical creatures will be very colourful and extraordinary in their make-up and costume, giving distinctive but scary non-human looks.

Research and Planning: Suitable and Non-Suitable Trailers

Suitable: Blair Witch Project

Blair Witch Project would be a perfect trailer to be influenced by because it is extremely stylistic into making the film and the trailer believable and realistic to create maximum horror and suspense. Although the set and plot is simple, it is effective in the long-run. It would be easy to immitate as there are little cast, the location (the woods) is free and also the use of handheld camera's works for it in the sense of it feeling like 'own footage'. This is a trailer our group will be heavily influenced by, however we do want to add our own twist and flavour to it so its not full on copying. Having said that, The Blair Witch Project will be a trailer ours would be compared to.

Non-Suitable: Sorority Row

Sorority Row would be a hard trailer to be influenced by as there are so many different scenes which look as if there has been a lot of planning and money gone into creating, which is good and effective for them but we simply don't have enough time or enough budget to create this type of trailer. The cast list is also big as there are a lot of extra's and a lot of main characters; which would be difficult to construct and work with. The use of explosions is a point too. Although this is a good trailer, the direction and tone of our trailer will be different to Sorority Row and also, even if we did want to be influenced by this trailer we wouldn't have enough time or money.
